Drain snaking vs. hydro jetting

The better method depends on the obstruction, pipe condition and access—not simply which tool sounds more powerful.

What cable cleaning does

Cable cleaning, often called snaking, uses a flexible cable and a suitable attachment to work mechanically through an accessible drain or sewer obstruction. Tool selection depends on the fixture and line involved. Clearing a path through a blockage can restore flow, but the result should be discussed in terms of what was actually removed.

Ask whether the goal is clearing an immediate obstruction, addressing a recurring problem, or preparing the line for a clearer inspection. Those goals can call for different follow-up.

What hydro jetting does

Hydro jetting uses pressurized water to clean a suitable sewer or drain line. The equipment and approach must fit the line, the buildup and the available access. It is not a universal answer for every slow sink, and it should not be chosen before considering the condition of the pipe.

Known defects, previous repairs and inspection findings matter. If the technician believes another approach is appropriate, ask what finding led to that recommendation.

Compare the decisions, not just the tools

QuestionWhy it matters
What is obstructing the line?A localized blockage and buildup along a line may need different approaches.
What is known about pipe condition?Visible damage or repair history can change the appropriate method.
Where can the line be accessed?Access affects equipment selection and how much of the line can be worked on.
Has the problem returned?Recurring trouble deserves a discussion of its cause and possible inspection.

Where camera inspection fits

An accessible camera inspection can help identify visible roots, obstructions or damage. Sometimes clearing standing water or a blockage first gives the camera a more useful view. Ask what can be seen now, what cannot be seen and whether another look would change the recommendation.

Neither a cable nor a water-cleaning method repairs a broken pipe. If damage is found, discuss its location, evidence and repair options separately from the cleaning.

Questions to ask before authorizing work

  • Why does this method fit my line and symptoms?
  • What access do you need, and what is included in the proposed work?
  • Is inspection useful before or after cleaning?
  • How will you explain the result and any remaining concern?
  • What should I do if the problem returns?
